National Volunteer Award for former President

Former President of the Camogie Association, Liz Howard was recognised for her unstinting dedication to camogie at the 2009 Volunteer in Sports Awards at Farmleigh House yesterday (Thursday, Feb 24).

Liz, who served as Uachtarán of Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael from 2006 to 2009 was presented with the National Administrator of the Year Award by Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism, Martin Cullen at a special ceremony which included Olympian Dr. Ronnie Delaney, Irish rugby and Leinster player Malcolm O’Kelly and Dublin footballer Jason Sherlock.

“On behalf of Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael I would like to congratulate Liz Howard on this award which she has received in recognition of her work for camogie as president of the Association.  Liz continues to give full commitment, enthusiasm and energy to her role as a member of Central Council of the Association and her continuous dedication to promoting and developing camogie at local and national levels has helped our sport greatly. I would like to also commend Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Martin Cullen and his department for running this awards scheme which is a tremendous recognition of the contribution by volunteers to our sports,” said Sinéad O’Connor, Ard Stiúrthóir

During her tenure as President of the Association Liz was instrumental in establishing a full-time administrative and games development team while she also initiated a Strategic Review of the Association, work which is ongoing at present.

The national awards to Volunteers in Irish Sport is an initiative of the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in conjunction with the Federation of Irish Sports. The awards seek to recognise the voluntary contribution of people across Ireland to sporting clubs and societies. This is the second time for the awards to be presented- they were previously presented in 2007.
