Moyderwell Girls get the ball rolling for Puck Around Tralee!!

On Wednesday March 3rd Puck Around Tralee got underway in Moyderwell National School
Supported by Moyderwell teachers and recent
Camogie enthusiasts - Niamh Griffin, Laura Daly and Helena Creagh,
37 pupils turned out after school to try their hand at the game of Camogie.

Put through their paces by Munster Camogie Development Officer Deirdre Murphy, Kerry hurler Stephen Goggin and Limerick U21 hurler Michael Kiely,
the girls showed plenty of promise and thoroughly enjoyed the hour- long session.

The girls will come together for 3 more Wednesday sessions, while neighbouring school Scoil Eoin Ballonagh, supported by teachers Triona Daly and Brenda Burke will have their sessions on Thursdays.

Both schools will come together on April 18th to play each other in a fun blitz.

On completion of all four sessions, participants will receive their
own hurley and sliotar so they can continue to practice their skills.
Both schools have also received 25 helmets, 30 hurleys and 25 sliotars. This equipment, allayed with the enthusiasm and support of the teachers of both schools means that there may be an exciting future in store for Camogie in Tralee!

Puck Around Tralee is a Camogie Association initiative supported by RAPID
and the Kerry County Council.

RAPID Coordinator Andy Smith stated that ‘Initiatives such as this provide an opportunity for young girls in RAPID areas to increase their participation sport, thereby enriching the lives of the community as a whole while Munster Camogie Development Officer Deirdre Murphy thanked those involved in the RAPID programme for investing in Camogie.

‘We have a fantastic game, which many people would love to experience.
The cost of equipment is often prohibitive so the funding provided by the RAPID programme meant that we could support the efforts of the schools, teachers and reward the enthusiasm of the pupils by providing them with their own hurley and sliotar. We see Puck Around Tralee as the beginning for Camogie in Tralee
following up our Camog Aerobics project and pre Christmas schools skills day. Parents are more than welcome to attend and help out as is anyone interested in hurling/Camogie resident in Tralee.’
