The President of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor urged all camogie followers to show their support by attending this Sunday’s triple header All Ireland Finals in Croke Park.

Speaking at this afternoon’s Captains’ Day photocall at GAA HQ, attended by President of the GAA Liam O’Neill and Group Head of Sport, RTÉ Ryle Nugent, Aileen Lawlor highlighted the upcoming games as the marquee item on the camogie calendar and a fabulous opportunity to see the country’s finest camogie players in action.

Down face Meath in the Premier Junior final at noon; Galway take on Derry in the Intermediate tie at 2.00pm and in the eagerly anticipated Senior final Wexford face Cork at 4.00pm.

“We are one of the largest female sports organisations in the country and I am making a direct appeal to all our members to come to Croke Park on Sunday for three top class games played by superb athletes and excellent ambassadors for the game of camogie. I am also extending that invite to all involved in Gaelic games and to general sports fans to witness the fastest field sport for women in the world.”

She highlighted the prominence of women in sport this year, as evidenced most recently at the Olympics and Paralympics.

“Sunday’s finals are one of the largest female sporting events in the country and given the increased coverage and deserved credit that women in sport, across a variety of disciplines have garnered this year alone, our upcoming games provide another opportunity to fix the spotlight firmly on our female sports stars and showcase their talents to a huge national audience.”

This year’s Senior and Intermediate Finals will be broadcast live on RTÉ The Sunday Game with the Senior game also on RTÉ Radio One Sunday Sport and the Premier Junior final available on RTÉ.ie.

Captains and managers from the six competing teams; Karen Atkinson, JJ Doyle (Wexford); Julia White, Paudie Murray, (Cork); Collette Gill, Tony Ward (Galway); Sinead Cassidy, John A Mullan (Derry); Jane Dolan, John Davis (Meath); Fionnuala Carr, Alastair McGilligan (Down) were also in attendance at this morning’s event.
