Camogie TY Initiative
16 students from St. Leos College, Carlow recently took part in a TY initiative under the guidance of Angela Gahan (Leinster Council Development Officer & TY Coordinator in St. Leos) and Sabrina Larkin (Leinster Participation and Growth Coordinator).

The TY Students completed the Camogie Foundation Course on the 22nd Jan and prior to that completed a referee/rules of the game workshop. The school would previously have had many successes in football and hockey, with many of the students having had no experience in camogie prior to this. However, they brought huge enthusiasm to the two days and a willingness to learn new skills as coaches. They are now eager to get involved with their nearest camogie club in coaching of underage teams, with greater confidence and knowledge of the rules and skills.

Congrats to all who took part and thanks to Georgina Kelly (camogie intern) for her help on both days, as well as the school itself for getting involved.

New After School Club supported by Offaly County Board
St. Brendans Community school, Birr is the venue for the new After School club being supported by Offaly County Board and TY students of the school. This new initiative kicked off on the 15th of Jan and is now in its third week of activity.

Players aged from u9 to u11 were invited from the surrounding clubs to take part every Monday from 4.30pm-5.30pm. With numbers growing every week, last week saw over 50 girls attend. These sessions are based on fun, introduction to skills and progression of skills over time.

The terrific TY students who came forward are interested in getting involved in club and school camogie activity and will complete a Foundation Coaching course next Monday to continue their coaching. The club is under the stewardship and supervision of Orla Carey Fitness, a local coach/player who has built up a great relationship between the TY’s, the players and parents. We look forward to this initiative continuing and hope to bring the same concept of clubs coming together to the north part of the county in the coming months.

Thank you must go to St. Brendans school for their support and facilities and the clubs/parents and children themselves for making this a success.

Joint Level 1 Coaching Course
A coming together of Carlow and Wicklow county boards and development officers saw a joint Level 1 Coaching Course run very successfully on the 19th/20th and 27th of January in Kildavin GAA and Aughrim GAA.

20 coaches filled this course, giving a huge amount of conversation and advice sharing with the added benefit of having Kate Kelly as assistant tutor delivering it over the 3 days. Each participant went away with a greater knowledge and understanding of the planning, skill development and physical fitness aspects of the course.

Many thanks to the two counties who made this possible and also to the two venues for hosting in top class fashion. We look forward to seeing these 20 coaches in action in the two counties in the coming season.

Leinster Officer Workshops up and running.
The first of the Officer Training Workshops within Leinster took place on Tuesday 30th Jan 2018 in the Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow. This Workshop was for Children’s Officer’s who hold that role within the club and county executives and saw 20 officers attend on the night from right across the province.

This was delivered excellently by Roberta Farrell and Stephen Flynn (National Children’s Officer) and proved to be a very informative evening, with lots of scenarios and possible ways of approaching the role as Children’s Officer covered, with the emphasis on the safety and well-being of the child at all times. The remaining Workshops in Officer Training in Leinster province are:

·         General Officer (Chair & Sec) – 20th Feb – Woodford Dolmen Hotel, Carlow
·         Registrar, Treasurer and PRO – 27th Feb – Leinster GAA Council Offices, Portlaoise
·         THDC – 6th March – Leinster Council GAA Offices, Portlaoise

If you wish to attend any of these as part of your role within the club/county please contact your county secretary for more information on how to register.
